Workshop 1. Alignment
“The highest expression of an asana occurs when the instrument of the body is optimally aligned, the action is strong and balanced and the attitude is spiritually pure and powerful.” In this first workshop, students will learn the physical alignment principles of the most frequently taught postures, so they can begin moving their bodies into their ideal blueprint for growth and expansion. When the physical body is aligned, the connective tissue becomes stronger, more resilient, and increases in flexibility, while the internal circulation, including prana, increases, and the overall flow of body energies is increased. Students will learn how to connect to their potency by finding the balance between stability and freedom in their bodies, and expressing their attitude and inherent beauty in each asana.
Workshop 2. Arm Balancing and Inversions
Beginning with an hour of heart and hip opening practice, this workshop will flow into arm balances and inversions. The students will build up strength, warmth and openness before venturing to turn their worlds’ upside down (literally). Apprehension usually cloaks these asanas, as students tend to feel overwhelmed by their complexity and the lack of time in a regular class situation to completely break them down step by step. Having the time to unravel the mysteries of how to get into postures like crow, kundinyasana and handstand will dissolve the student’s fear (which is what normally limits them way beyond physical capacity) and give them the confidence to believe in their boundless potential. Additionally, the partner work they’ll participate them will allow them to go deeper than they would be capable of on their own.
Workshop 3. Finding the Celebration and Joy in Your Practice
This workshop will focus on teaching the students to find the good, the joy, and the brightness in their yoga asana and body/mind/heart experience. Building on the foundations taught in Workshop #1, they will move from basic physical alignment and the balance of stability and freedom to the beauty of self-expression and shining out in each asana. Learning to illuminate yourself and hug to hug in so you can expand out completely transforms your experience of your body in your practice - through expressing radiance, the student learns they are powerful enough to choose their perception on life, that they can choose to focus on the beauty and wholeness in the experience instead of on their limitations or any struggle experienced.
Workshop 4. Backbending & Hip-Opening
This workshop will begin with a heart and hip opening practice, moving into back bends and a restorative hip-opening sequence at the end. As with the previous workshops, the postures’ basic principles of alignment will be taught, as well as the concepts of illumination and whole-heartedness. The students will learn how to soften the heart energetically to help the physical unfolding.
Workshop 5. Pranayama, Yin & Meditation
This workshop will begin with basic breath exercises, such as alternate nostril breathing, continue into a yin practice to open the shoulders, neck, hips, hamstrings and spine and finish with a half hour guided meditation. The students will gain enough knowledge on basic pranayama and meditation that they can develop a self practice.
